Kammerofen

Case hardening is the enrichening with carbon in an area limited to the edges of tools and components. Mechanical characteristics are improved.

After hardening usually an annealing procedure will be neccesary to reduce tentions. For case hardening different techniques can be used like chamber-ofens, continuous furnaces, salt baths, low pressure facilitys etc. Partial hardening is possible when appropriate isolation techniques are used.

Advantages of case hardening:
- increased hardness and better mechanical properties of edge layer
- increased wear resistance, a ductile core and increased strength properties under alternating flexural stress.
